Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technology Policy

Yuridis recognizes the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in academic writing. This policy establishes clear standards for the ethical, transparent, and responsible use of AI tools in the preparation, submission, editorial processing, and peer review of manuscripts. This policy applies to all authors, editors, and reviewers.

1. Authorship and Accountability

  • AI tools do not meet the criteria for authorship. No AI tool may be listed as an author on any submitted manuscript.
  • Authors bear full responsibility for the entire content of their manuscript, including any portions generated, edited, or enhanced using AI tools. This includes the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical soundness of the work.
  • All AI-generated content must be critically reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors before submission. Authors must confirm the factual accuracy of any statements, citations, data, or figures that involve AI assistance.

2. Disclosure Requirements

Authors must disclose any use of AI tools in manuscript preparation. The disclosure must include:

  • The name of the AI tool used (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, Gemini).
  • The specific purpose for which the tool was used (e.g., grammar checking, language refinement, drafting specific sections).
  • The extent of AI involvement in the manuscript.

This disclosure must be stated in the Acknowledgements section or in a dedicated Declaration of AI Use statement placed before the References section.

Example disclosure: "Portions of this manuscript were edited using [Name of AI tool]. The tool was used for [specific purpose]. All AI-generated content was thoroughly reviewed, revised, and validated by the authors, who take full responsibility for the final content."

3. AI-Generated Content Threshold

Manuscripts will only be considered for publication if the AI-generated content detection result does not exceed 25%. To ensure compliance:

  • Authors must submit evidence of the AI-generated content detection result alongside their manuscript.
  • Authors must complete and upload the Declaration of Manuscript Eligibility Regarding AI Use as part of the submission process.
  • Failure to comply with this requirement may result in rejection at any stage of the editorial or review process.

4. Permitted Uses of AI Tools

AI tools may be used only for the following purposes, provided full disclosure is made:

  • Language and Grammar Refinement: Improving readability, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.
  • Summarization Support: Assisting in summarizing existing literature, provided authors verify the accuracy of the summary and ensure proper citation of original sources.
  • Brainstorming and Outlining: Assisting in generating ideas or structuring the manuscript.
  • Drafting Support: Assisting in drafting non-research-critical sections (e.g., parts of the Introduction or Discussion for stylistic purposes), which must then be thoroughly reviewed and revised by the authors.

5. Prohibited Uses of AI Tools

The following uses are strictly prohibited:

  • Full or Substantial Content Generation: Using AI to produce the majority of the manuscript, thereby replacing the author's original analytical and intellectual contribution.
  • Generating Fictitious Content: Creating false data, fabricated research results, or non-existent references and citations.
  • AI-Generated Research Data: Generating images, tables, figures, or graphs through AI tools to support research results without explicit disclosure and verification.
  • Unverified AI Output: Inserting AI-generated text into a manuscript without further verification, correction, and adaptation by the author.
  • Misrepresenting Research: Using AI to intentionally mislead readers about the methods, results, or conclusions of the research.

6. Responsibilities of Editors

  • Editors must not upload any submitted manuscript to an AI tool for purposes of content evaluation, editorial assessment, or decision-making.
  • Editors must not use AI tools to translate or process manuscript content in any form that exposes confidential material to third-party platforms.
  • If an AI-generated content detection check is necessary, editors must use only secure, reliable, and journal-approved detection tools to protect manuscript confidentiality and author intellectual property rights.

7. Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Reviewers must not upload any manuscript, in full or in part, to any AI tool for the purpose of evaluating scholarly content, drafting review comments, or assisting in decision-making.
  • Reviewers must not use AI tools for translation, paraphrasing, grammar correction, or any other language-processing functions involving manuscript content.
  • Reviewers may use AI tools solely to improve the language of their own review comments, provided no part of the manuscript content is revealed to the AI tool in the process.
  • Reviewers remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, and independence of their review reports.

8. Consequences of Non-Compliance

Failure to adhere to this policy constitutes a serious breach of publication ethics. Consequences may include:

  • Rejection of the submitted manuscript.
  • Retraction of the published article.
  • Prohibition of the author(s) from future submissions to Yuridis.
  • Notification to the authors' institution and relevant academic ethics committees.

This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect developments in AI technology and evolving standards in scholarly publishing.
