Parapolitika: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies is an international peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta.

The journal focuses on scholarly research and critical discussion in the field of political studies, including governance and democracy, political institutions, elections, political parties and representation, political theory, civil society and social movements, citizenship, and public management.  The journal name is intended to clearly identify the journal's disciplinary focus and institutional affiliation and should not be interpreted as implying an association with other journals or organizations.

Types of Manuscripts Accepted:

Parapolitika accepts several types of submissions, including:

  • Original Research Articles: Full-length empirical or theoretical research papers
  • Review Articles: Comprehensive reviews and synthesis of current literature on political and democracy studies.
  • Book Reviews: Critical evaluations of recently published books relevant to the journal’s scope.

Parapolitika: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies is published twice a year, in:

  • February
  • August

The journal is committed to maintaining the stated publication schedule. Any significant changes to the publication schedule will be communicated transparently through the journal website.  

  1. Archiving Policy

Parapolitika: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies is committed to ensuring the long-term preservation and continued accessibility of its published scholarly content.

The journal maintains an on-site digital archive of all published articles through its own electronic journal system. Published articles, including their metadata and full-text files, are retained in the journal's online archive and remain accessible through the journal website.

The on-site archive serves as the journal's primary archive for its published scholarly content. The Editorial Team and publisher are responsible for maintaining the availability and integrity of the archived content. The journal regularly maintains and reviews its digital archiving and backup procedures to minimize the risk of data loss and to ensure continued access to the journal's published content.

The journal is committed to continuously improving its digital preservation practices and, where appropriate, establishing additional long-term preservation arrangements to ensure that published content remains accessible in the event of disruption to the journal's publication activities.

  1. Copyright

Copyright of each published article is clearly indicated on the article's full text. For PARAPOLITIKA, the copyright statement should be presented consistently on the published article and journal website.

The current published articles indicate:

“Copyright©2026. Owned by Author(s), published by PARAPOLITIKA: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies”

as shown in a 2026 article published by the journal.  The copyright of individual articles is separate from the copyright or ownership of the journal website and publishing platform.

  1. Licensing

PARAPOLITIKA is an Open Access journal.

All published articles are made freely accessible to readers without subscription or access fees. The journal's published articles currently indicate the use of a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-Share Alike (CC-BY-NC-SA) licence. 

Under this licence, readers may share and adapt the published material subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable Creative Commons licence.

The journal should display the applicable Creative Commons licence clearly on:

  1. the journal website;
  2. each published article; and
  3. the full-text HTML/PDF version where applicable.

The licence should link to the corresponding official Creative Commons licence page.

  1. Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

PARAPOLITIKA is committed to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly publishing process. The journal follows internationally recognized principles of publication ethics, including the relevant guidance and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Editorial decisions are based on scholarly merit and are not influenced by the author's nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, political beliefs, gender, institutional affiliation, or other personal characteristics. The journal promotes accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the publication process.

7.1 Authorship and Contributorship

All authors listed in a manuscript must have made a significant contribution to the research and/or preparation of the manuscript. All individuals who have made substantive contributions should be appropriately acknowledged or included as authors in accordance with accepted scholarly authorship standards.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • all listed authors have approved the manuscript;
  • all authors agree to its submission;
  • no individual who has made a substantial contribution is improperly excluded;
  • authorship is not assigned to individuals who did not contribute substantively; and
  • changes to authorship after submission are properly justified and approved by all affected authors.

The journal's Author Guidelines currently require all members of a research team to be listed, while editorial communication is conducted primarily with the corresponding/main author. 

7.2 Complaints and Appeals

Authors may submit complaints or appeals concerning editorial decisions or publication procedures to the Editor-in-Chief. Complaints and appeals should:

  • be submitted in writing;
  • clearly identify the manuscript concerned;
  • explain the reason for the complaint or appeal; and
  • provide supporting information where relevant.

Appeals will be reviewed objectively and independently from the original decision where possible. An appeal does not guarantee reversal of an editorial decision.

7.3 Allegations of Research Misconduct

The journal takes allegations of research misconduct seriously. Potential misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • plagiarism;
  • fabrication of data;
  • falsification of data;
  • duplicate publication;
  • redundant publication;
  • citation manipulation;
  • inappropriate authorship;
  • undeclared conflicts of interest; and
  • manipulation of the peer-review process.

When an allegation is received, the editor will assess the matter and, where appropriate, follow relevant COPE procedures and seek clarification from the authors, reviewers, editors, or relevant institutions.

7.4 Conflicts of Interest

Authors, editors, and reviewers must disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest that could influence the publication process. Reviewers should decline an assignment where they have a conflict of interest with the authors, institutions, or research concerned. Editors must avoid making editorial decisions on manuscripts where they have a personal, professional, financial, or academic conflict of interest.

7.5 Data Sharing and Reproducibility

Authors are encouraged to make relevant research data, materials, instruments, and analytical procedures available where ethically and legally appropriate. Authors should provide sufficient methodological information to allow readers and other researchers to understand and, where possible, reproduce the research. Data involving confidential information, personal information, vulnerable populations, or other protected material should not be shared where doing so would violate ethical or legal requirements.

7.6 Ethical Oversight

Research involving human participants, personal data, or other ethically sensitive research subjects should comply with applicable ethical standards and institutional requirements. Where ethical approval is required, authors should provide information concerning the relevant ethical approval or institutional review process. The editors may request evidence of ethical approval when considered necessary. 

7.7 Intellectual Property

Authors are responsible for ensuring that manuscripts do not infringe the intellectual property rights of others. Authors must obtain permission to reproduce copyrighted materials where permission is required. Proper attribution and citation must be provided for ideas, data, figures, tables, images, and other materials originating from third parties.

7.8 Post-Publication Discussions

PARAPOLITIKA welcomes scholarly discussion concerning published articles. Readers may communicate substantive comments, corrections, or concerns to the editorial office. Where appropriate, the journal may facilitate post-publication discussion, publish corrections or clarifications, or take other editorial action.

7.9 Corrections and Retractions

The journal may publish corrections, retractions, or other post-publication notices when errors or ethical concerns materially affect the scholarly record. Corrections will be clearly identified and linked to the original article. Retraction may be considered where there is substantial evidence of serious error, research misconduct, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other circumstances that undermine the integrity of the published work.

The journal will follow relevant COPE guidance when handling corrections and retractions.

7.10 Corrections, Retractions, and Expressions of Concern

The journal is committed to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record. When errors or misconduct are identified in published articles, the Editorial Team will take appropriate action in accordance with COPE guidelines:

  • Corrections (Erratum/Corrigendum): Honest errors that do not invalidate the work's findings will be corrected through a published correction notice linked to the original article.
  • Retractions: Articles will be retracted if findings are proven unreliable due to severe misconduct (e.g., data fabrication, plagiarism) or honest major error. Retraction notices will state the reason for retraction.
  • Expressions of Concern: Issued if an investigation into alleged misconduct is inconclusive or ongoing, but there is strong indication of potential misconduct.
  1. Peer Review

PARAPOLITIKA is an international peer-reviewed journal.  All research articles submitted to the journal undergo editorial screening and peer review.

Peer Review Process

The general process consists of:

  1. Initial Editorial Screening

The editorial team assesses the manuscript for:

  • conformity with the journal's aims and scope;
  • compliance with author guidelines;
  • originality;
  • academic relevance;
  • basic methodological and structural quality; and
  • compliance with publication ethics requirements.
  1. Similarity Screening

Submitted manuscripts may undergo similarity checking using plagiarism-detection software before or during the editorial process.

  1. Peer Review

Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial screening are sent to qualified reviewers with relevant expertise. The journal uses a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from each other during the review process.

  1. Revision

Authors may be asked to revise their manuscripts based on reviewer and editorial comments.

  1. Editorial Decision

The final decision concerning publication is made by the editor based on:

  • the reviewers' assessments;
  • the quality and relevance of the manuscript;
  • the author's responses to reviewer comments; and
  • the journal's editorial standards.

Reviewers provide recommendations; they do not make the final publication decision. The journal should clearly state that acceptance is not guaranteed and that submission does not constitute a promise of publication.

Reviewer Selection

Reviewers are selected based on their expertise and relevance to the subject of the manuscript.

Reviewers must:

  • maintain confidentiality;
  • provide objective and constructive assessments;
  • identify relevant literature where appropriate;
  • disclose conflicts of interest; and
  • decline the assignment when they are unable to provide an impartial review.

Peer Review Exceptions

If a particular content type does not undergo the standard peer-review process, this should be clearly identified on the journal website and, where appropriate, in the published content.

Publication Dates

Each published research article should display the:

  • submission date;
  • revision date, where applicable;
  • acceptance date; and
  • publication date.

The current PARAPOLITIKA article pages already display publication dates and DOI information, for example the 2026 article published on 19 August 2026.

PARAPOLITIKA is an Open Access journal.

Readers can access the full text of published articles without subscription or pay-per-view fees. The journal's purpose is to facilitate broad and immediate dissemination of scholarly research in political studies. The journal website currently identifies PARAPOLITIKA as an open-access journal. 

  1. Ownership and Management

Parapolitika: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies is published by:

The journal's ownership, publishing responsibility, and institutional affiliation should be clearly displayed on the journal website. Where applicable, links to the official website of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences should be provided. The journal should ensure that its institutional affiliation is presented accurately and does not mislead authors or readers. The current journal description identifies the Political Science program of FISIP UPN “Veteran” Jakarta as the publishing unit. 

  1. Advisory Body / Editorial Board

PARAPOLITIKA maintains an Editorial Board consisting of scholars with expertise relevant to the journal's aims and scope. The journal website should provide:

  • full name;
  • institutional affiliation;
  • country;
  • academic/research expertise; and
  • ORCID or other scholarly identifiers where available.

Members of the Editorial Board must have agreed to serve in the stated position. The editorial board should be reviewed periodically to ensure that its composition remains relevant to the journal's scope and reflects appropriate academic diversity.

  1. Editorial Team and Contact Information

The journal website provides information about the editorial team and contact information for the editorial office. The journal should clearly identify:

  • Editor-in-Chief;
  • Managing Editor;
  • Editorial Board members;
  • reviewers or reviewer board where publicly listed;
  • institutional affiliation; and
  • official editorial contact information.

The journal should also provide a complete institutional mailing address for correspondence. The OJS currently provides dedicated sections for Editorial Team, Peer Reviewers, and Contact. 

  1. Author Fees

PARAPOLITIKA: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) for manuscripts accepted for publication.

If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author(s) will be required to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) of IDR 500,000.

The APC is charged only after the manuscript has been formally accepted for publication. There are no submission fees or charges associated with the initial submission and peer review process. The APC supports the costs associated with the publication process, including editorial management, copyediting, proofreading, layout editing, online publication, website maintenance, and the long-term accessibility of published articles.

Payment of the APC does not influence the editorial decision, peer review process, or acceptance of a manuscript. Editorial decisions are based solely on the academic quality, originality, relevance, and compliance of the manuscript with the journal's editorial and publication policies.

Authors who have questions regarding the APC or payment procedure may contact the Editorial Team of PARAPOLITIKA.

  1. Other Revenue

The journal's sources of financial support and revenue should be transparent. Possible sources may include:

  • institutional funding;
  • university subsidies;
  • publication fees;
  • grants;
  • sponsorship;
  • advertising; or
  • other legitimate sources.

Any revenue generated by the journal must not influence editorial decisions. Editorial decisions must be based on scholarly quality, originality, relevance, and compliance with the journal's editorial policies. 

  1. Advertising

PARAPOLITIKA: Journal of Politics and Democracy Studies does not currently accept or publish advertisements on its journal website or in its publications. Editorial decisions, peer review, article acceptance, publication scheduling, and published content are conducted independently of commercial interests. The journal does not allow any commercial interest to influence the editorial process or the academic content of published articles.

  1. Direct Marketing

Any direct marketing or manuscript solicitation conducted by or on behalf of PARAPOLITIKA must be appropriate, targeted, transparent, and unobtrusive. Communication with potential authors should provide accurate information about:

  • the journal;
  • its aims and scope;
  • publication schedule;
  • peer-review process;
  • publication fees;
  • submission procedures; and
  • editorial policies.

The journal will not make misleading claims concerning:

  • indexing status;
  • impact or ranking;
  • peer-review procedures;
  • acceptance rates;
  • publication timelines;
  • editorial board membership; or
  • guaranteed publication.

Direct marketing activities must not pressure authors to submit manuscripts or imply guaranteed acceptance.
