Abstract

Surgery is a medical procedure that uses invasive procedures. Invasive procedures in children make children more susceptible to anxiety, especially before surgery. This study aims to determine the correlation between therapeutic communication and preoperative anxiety in children. The design used in this study is a cross-sectional correlation. The population in this study were all parents of patients in the pediatric ward from November 2025 to February 2026 and the number of research samples was 61 respondents, determined using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection instruments used were a therapeutic communication questionnaire and the Modified Spence Children's Anxiety Scale - Parent version. The results obtained were that almost all respondents who stated that the nurse's therapeutic communication was in the good category, then the child experienced moderate anxiety, namely 50 respondents (81.9%). Based on the results of the Spearman rank rho analysis test, p value = 0.000 < α = 0.05 was obtained, so H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted, meaning there is a relationship between therapeutic communication and preoperative anxiety in children. There was a strong negative relationship between nurses’ therapeutic communication and preoperative anxiety in children, indicating that better therapeutic communication was associated with lower levels of anxiety in children.
