Abstract

Peripheral diabetic neuropathy is a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that can reduce patients’ quality of life. Cardiovascular disease and glycemic control are considered contributing factors to this condition. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between cardiovascular disease and glycemic control with the occurrence of peripheral diabetic neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus at Tarakan General Hospital, Jakarta. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 96 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact test for cardiovascular disease and Chi-Square test for glycemic control variables. The results showed no statistically significant association between cardiovascular disease and peripheral diabetic neuropathy (p = 0.124). In contrast, glycemic control was significantly associated with peripheral diabetic neuropathy based on HbA1c (p < 0.001) and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose levels, while fasting blood glucose showed no significant association. Patients with uncontrolled glycemic control had a higher proportion of peripheral diabetic neuropathy.
