Abstract

COVID-19 has changed the way teachers interact with the students and education sector has readjusted the teaching and learning method since the beginning of 2020. In this case, teacher’s creativity in teaching is being tested. Most of the time, students do not receive equal chance to practice and do not seem to actively participate in the learning process. Thus, Department of Communication Science, Kalbis Institute proposes to conduct a community service project to help teachers in SDI Al Azhar 31 Yogyakarta in dealing with communication problems since the online delivery method has been applied. Most teachers find it difficult to communicate with the students, their parents, and with fellow teachers due to the face-to-face meeting restrictions. Problems in teaching also appears such as the difficulty in handling language classes as the students are less active in classroom activity. During the program, the teachers were exposed to the difference between Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), foreign language teaching overseas, Bahasa Indonesia sebagai Pengantar Asing (BIPA) teaching, and the activities. At the end of the program, the teachers are expected to get more insights on how to creatively encourage the students to participate in online language class.
